Lake Wales, Florida is a small town located in the state of Florida. The community was originally founded by Captain James Cook on July 24, 1779 as part of his exploration of the Florida Peninsula. It was named for Welsh Lake which he sighted while exploring the area. After a few years, Cook sold the land to John Eastman and his wife Deborah who built a cabin there. On December 5, 1821, Eastman donated 1/2 acre of land to the United States government in order to create an eastward bound canal through the peninsula. This donation became known as "The Bayonet Point Donation". In 1835, Captain David Levy purchased 640 acres of land from Eastman and donated it to the town for development purposes. By 1840, Lake Wales had grown sufficiently that it incorporated as a village under its own name with a population of seventy-six people. In 1865, during Reconstruction in America following the American Civil War, Lake Wales became one of several townships within newly created Landmark County after Congress passed legislation creating new county boundaries. As such, it continued to be governed by its own municipality until 1971 when it was consolidated into Miami-Dade County pursuant to an act passed by Congress known as The Tax Reform Act of 1971. Today, Lake Wales is home to a small but vibrant community which reflects both its early history and current culture. Its residents are proud locals who continue their traditions including fishing and golfing; however they also enjoy plenty of other activities such as art galleries and nightlife options. With access to many recreational activities and cultural attractions nearby like Daytona Beach and Ft Lauderdale Beach; it's easy living here!
