Lake Wales, Florida is a small, rural town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern border of Polk County and has a narrow neck of land separating it from Lake Wateree to the east and the Putnam County line to the west. The first Europeans to visit this area were Jesuit missionaries in 1655-1657. The area that now makes up Lake Wales was part of what was then Indian Territory. In 1834, US President Andrew Jackson signed an agreement giving US citizenship to all Seminole Indians who had lived in Florida for over ten years as part of treaties made with Spain following the Seminole War (1813-1835). As part of these treaties, Spanish land grants were also given out in what is today Polk County. These grants included about .5 square miles (1 km²) of present-day Lake Wales and its environs. The town site was laid out by J P Taylor in 1892 during his campaign for sheriff of Polk County. A post office called "Taylorville" was established there on July 24, 1893. Mrs Lillie Ducharme set up her home near present day First Baptist Church on August 8th, 1895; this church still stands today within walking distance of most residents. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1]of 2000, there were 1,812 people residing in town: 953 men and 1083 women; 2 children under age 18 living with their parents but not including them; 233 households out of which 524 had children under age 6; and 132 families whose members did not work outsidethe home: 96% owner occupied Renter occupied housing units

Lake Wales, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,640 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area. Lake Wales is located onState Road 441 east of State Road 436 and west of Interstate 441. It is bordered by Lake Okeechobee to the north and east, Boynton Beach to the south, and Venice to the west. The name "Lake Wales" comes from Indian word "wilga", meaning "big body of water." The first white European settler in what is now Polk County was James Ketchum in 1836. He named his land after Welsh Chief Godfrey Lloyd who had been governing that area at the time as military governor for British WestFlorida Territory. The first post office in Lake Wales was established in 1837 with Elisha Dyer as Postmaster. A store and grist mill were built near present day Pahokee Boulevard about this time. By 1840 there were four stores and two mills in operation in Lake Wales with a population of just over 50 people. In 1846 Gilbert White founded White's grocery store on Orange Blossom Trail which became one of Polk County's most important businesses until it closed its doors in 1949 due to competition from Walmart . Albion Patterson ran an opera house here from 1906 until 1925 when it burned down while being used for stage play production . In 1926 Community Bank opened up shop here before closing down again four years later because of bad loans made by then bank president Don Hinton prior to his resignation from that company In 1951 Aloma Park took over operations at White's store while community banks disbanded across Polk County during that year's banking deregulation act known as Operation Wetback which targeted smaller banks by making them ineligible for government lending licenses if they did not participate fully in deregulations which included opening their own branches outside their communities
In 1839, the first white person to set foot in what is now Lake Wales, Florida was Captain John C. Worth, who named his land "Worth" after himself. The area around present-day Lake Wales was part of Apalachicola River Country until Indian Removal Act of 1830. The first permanent settler in what is now Lake Wales was James Cook, who arrived in 1794 and named his new land "Cook's Plantation." Cook's Plantation was located on the north side of present-day County Road 20 near mile marker 564. In 1800, Wm. Hagerty established a plantation about six miles south of Cook's Plantation. By 1810, all but one acre (0.34 hectares) of Hagerty's plantation were developed by James Bate as a cattle and cotton operation known as "Bate's Post." Bate sold most of his holdings in 1822 to Jno. Aiken for $1,000 cash and 10 acres (4 ha), which became Aiken County at that time. At some point between 1825 and 1830 an additional 500 acres (200 ha) were added to current County Road 20 near mile marker 564; this area became known as Aiken County Park today. The first post office in what is nowLake Wales was established at Watauga on October 14, 1840 byOrder No., 0007/40 from Gov't Gazette No., 7693/1841 under Section 2(a) of the Postmaster General Act . It served as the county seat from 1840 until it moved to Gainesville on November 1st 1860 pursuant to Order No., 0004/60 from Govt Gazette No., 8362/1860 . From 1860 until it moved back to Gainesville on January 3rd 1893 pursuant to Order No., 0014/93 from Govt Gazette No., 9556/1893 under Section 4(b) of the Florida State Constitution . It served as the county seat again from 1993 until it was placed within Kissimmee Township effective February 1st 2003
