In 1865, the Seminole Tribe in Florida possessed 2,500 firearms. The Treaty of Hahokam was signed on October 21, 1867 by United States and Indian Agent John C. Sturgis and the Seminoles and it ended a conflict that began in 1836 when two Seminole chiefs, Okeechobee (1814-1870) and Apalachicola (1795-1865), disputed land titles with the U.S. government. In 1868, General James Ewing ordered all Seminoles in Florida to disarm or be deported. A total of 1,000 guns were confiscated from residents between 1865-1868. On November 5, 1903, Congress passed the National Firearms Act which created gun control laws in the United States After passage of the act President Theodore Roosevelt made a statement which is still remembered: "The only thing we need now are more rifles and pistols; everything else will come after."
Lake Wales, Florida is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Lake Wales is located on the eastern shore of Lake Wales proper and extends into what is now Broward County to the west. To the north it borders Everglades National Park, while to the south it borders Palm Beach County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Lake Wales has a total area of , all land. The community was founded in 1917 as part of a large citrus farm called Wofford Farms and named after Professor Arthur Wofford of Vanderbilt University who served as its first president and director from 1917 until his death in 1923. In 1951 US Airways Corporation donated 1/4 acre (0.2 km²) for development into an airport that would eventually become one of South Florida's most important commercial airports. It had its initial commercial service starting with American Airlines on September 15, 1947 with Douglas DC-6s flown by Captain James Tatum from Miami International Airport to Clermont Field near Gainesville Georgia; then Pan American World Airways flew J47s Konrad Zuse and Heinrich Himmler back and forth between Orlando International Airport and Lake Wales three times daily during 1948–1951 respectively before both airlines were merged into Pan Am Airways which became US Airways Corporation on December 12, 1951 effective January 1st following their merger with British Air Lines plc some time earlier). On March 10th 1957 Northwest Orient Airlines also made an early arrival at this new airport when their Boeing 727-200L "Northeast" registration number 4573 chartered from Braniff Airways Ltd., based at Dallas Love Field (now Fort Worth Texas) and flown by Captains Curt Loover and Harry Smith fromMiami Int'l Airport (now Midway Air Force Base) about 50 miles east over Palm Beach County Heads towards West Palm Beach where they arrived gate #1 just minutes after takeoff! Sheared off course due to icing later that day but still managed to get within visual range! 5 days prior Southwest Air Lines had inaugurated their own airline terminal adjacent to runway 17R which code share operation between them & Northwest & USAirways finally ending less than 2 years later when Northwest reverted back to Braniff Airways Ltd.. Lake Wales, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee- palms area. The townsite that now makes up Lake Wales was first settled by a group of African Americans in 1839. In 1847, white settlers from Georgia arrived and began to clear land for development. A post office was established in 1848 and the community name changed to Lake Wales in 1850. The town site was officially platted on February 26, 1861 by commissioners John Pemberton and David Waddell with intent to create an agricultural center around a mill on the stream which ran through the town site. The first store opened in 1862 and soon after residents began cultivating maize, cotton, potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes and other vegetables for local markets. By 1870 cattle were being raised and later dairy products were produced including cheese, butter, milk and ice cream. On July 3rd of that year residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name of "Lake Wales". From then until 1893 when it became part of Polk County there was no central government at any level within the village or county; each individual municipality had its own board of commissioners with power over police department policy (and even firefighting). In 1896 Lake Wales incorporated as a city under charter number 9298 with mayor J D Curry as its first leader. That same year also saw construction begin on what would become one of Polk County's most famous landmarks - The Lucille Bogan Hotel - named after hotelier Mrs Lillie Bogan who purchased the lot from developer Alfred Hovey for $10 per acre . It wasn't until 1954 when voters passed an referendum allowing incorporation into Seminole County which made Lake Wales an official city again . Today much remains unchanged about those early days: A grocery store still stands next door to where Brady's Ice Cream used to be open; blacksmiths once built homes out side their shops; Main Street still has businesses like hardware store & harness shop lining it ..... but there are also many reminders that this sleepy corner of southcentral Florida has seen some hard times recently:instancely 1 high school closed down due to lackadaisical maintenance practices 2 more closed last year due to budget cuts ...... yet Despite all these challenges citizens continue striving towards something better everyday ......... thanks mainly to our wonderful history
The area now known as Lake Wales was first inhabited by the Seminole Indians. They were pushed out of their land in the late 1800s by white settlers. The first white person to come to the area was Captain James Cook, who landed on the island in 1794. In 1898, Florida acquired its current name from a controversy over whether or not it was separate from Alabama.
