Today there are more than a dozen small businesses located within walking distance of each other in what used to be an exclusive enclave for downtown Fayetteville residents only!

The first post office opened at Lake Wales on October 8, 1892; it was renamed Winter Haven in 1907 afterWinterhaven Island near Savannah, Georgia which had been purchased by McNamara for $5,000. By 1916 Winter Haven had outgrown its original site and began to grow around it along bayous LaPorte and Bayou Teche with new homes being built on land leased from local farmers or bought from developers interested in developing these areas into holiday resorts or commercial centers. World War II saw an increased demand for winter recreation resources in Central Florida due to the large military installations located there including Fort Walton Beach (then called West Palm Beach) and Eglin Air Force Base at nearby Maitland Air Force Base; both communities were devastated by bombing raids during that conflict but not so much Lake Wales which continued to experience relatively high levels of visitation throughout most of the war despite limited infrastructure devoted specifically to this purpose. After the war ended occupancy rates decreased slowly until they reached lows late in the decade before increasing again through the late 1920s through 1940s as vacationers turned their attention back to Lake Wales as a principal destination following world War II boom times across allOf Florida In 1958 Lake Wales became designated as a Unincorporated Community underFlorida Statutes section 12-2-10(b). Since then it has experienced various growth spurts including rapid annexation by other adjacent communities during periods when lakefront property became available; however annexation typically results when two municipalities decide they have enough overlap between them without any prospect of ever achieving common goals or objectives beyond convenience store extension stores sharing one mall lot without any streets connecting them
