Lake Wales has been home to humans since the early Paleo-Indians. The area was first populated by A according to archaeological evidence and there are several hundred ancient human remains found throughout the area. One of the earliest Native American groups in Florida was the Timucua. They also inhabited Brickell Bay, which is located east of Lake Wales and south of Miami Beach. The Timucua built a fortified village on an island in the bay. In 1765, French explorer Jean Baptiste Duperron discovered what may have been their settlement when he landed on Brickell Bay. He named it La Belle Isle after his goal of finding a Female Fortunate who would be his wife based on his observation that she looked like a "happy woman." In 1808, Spanish explorer Don Antonio de la Luz y Ortega explored and mapped much of Florida including parts of Lake Wales. He named it Ybor City after Ybor Park in Cincinnati, Ohio where he had dinner with President James K. Polk and other dignitaries on October 15th, 1848
