Lake Wales, Florida is a small town located in Osceola County, Florida. The population was 1,052 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Kissimmee–Hollywood–Jacksonville Combined Statistical Area. Lake Wales was founded in 1892 by Jameson Phelps and Julius Rosenwald as a citrus growing community on the banks of Okeechobee River. In 1912, Phelps sold his interest to his partner William Serten and the community name changed to Lake Wales after Serten's purchase of a tract of land south of Lake Worth near Kissimmee. The first grocery store opened in 1914 and by 1922 there were six businesses including two banks, three churches and two schools. A post office was established at Lake Wales in 1916 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1951. A fire destroyed most of the downtown district in 1948 but new construction continued with an indoor arena/pool complex being built between 1949 and 1952 which included a movie theater (the first such structure in Osceola County), four restaurants (including one owned by Walt Disney), three stores (one general store, one hardware store and one nightclub), four bowling lanes, five tennis courts and seven houses were built or renovated during this time period along with other public works projects such as watermain replacement,. In 1954, when Putnam County became organized into counties within Seminole State College District 4J under then Superintendent Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr., all school districts within Seminole School District 4J were merged into Lake Wales Consolidated School District #2 with headquarters at 601 E Main Street; however, Tower Road Elementary School still functions as its district-wide elementary school despite having been closed since 1955 due to budget constraints caused by consolidation efforts. By 1975 there were only ten businesses left operating out of 1,052 residents; however nine had closed by that time including three churches which closed their doors for good around 1984 due to financial difficulties brought on largely by changes in zoning laws which limited building sizes without violating historic preservation regulations. On May 15th 1978 Osceola County commissioners voted 3-1 to annex neighboring Miami-Dade County so that Osceola would have greater access to international trade opportunities; however this annexation never happened because Miami-Dade refused to recognize any change from what state county government actually operated under before 1959 when they reorganized under state law following the creation ofSeminole School District 4J through consolidation efforts among various school districts throughout Seminole SSD4J; instead they reverted back to their pre-1959 form with county government operating essentially unchanged apart from duplication amongst various agencies responsible for education while also imposing new taxes which led many businesses owners & residents outside those boundaries closures although not all did eventually go belly up). As a result much damage was done both physically & emotionally over twenty years hurricane activity has resulted combined social services being providedinity walkinsess organized through private organizations w/o funding & no authority over military bases nor airspace - resulting126 children homeless permanent displacement total loss (-$158 million) . As recently as late 2016 Orlando City Stadium plans called for significant renovation costing $200 million; however these plans now look unlikely given recent economic conditions& lack of urgency from city leadership who maintain focus on Central Florida Development Authority's ambitious newly proposed Light Rail Plan which would replace bus traffic thru central city neighborhoods rather than provide transportation options beyond stadium?
