The name Lake Wales comes from the Spanish word "La Vela" meaning "flat bottom." The flat bottom made it an ideal spot for agriculture because it could be flooded easily for planting crops such as cotton or rice. In 1868 Andrew Jackson Polk donated land to create what is now Lake Wales Township; Polk also served as its first town planner. At that time there were just five homes in what is now Lake Wales Township; today there are over 2,000 residents living in this thriving community which has experienced many growth opportunities thanks to its location on US 1 and proximity to other major metropolitan areas in Florida and South Carolina. One of the earliest businesses in Lake Wales was a grocery store operated by Aiken Grocery Company Ltd.; this business opened in 1922 on UPPER CLEARWATER CREEK Road (now State Road 827), about one mile east of present day SHANE ROAD/LAKEWOOD DRIVE/PARK RD./LAKE WATSON PKWY./TRANSPORTATION CENTER NEAR EAST GATESWAY Drpark Rd.). This grocery store was closed by 1984 when Albertsons acquired Aiken Grocery Company Ltd., but another grocery store purchased by Albertsons still operates today on SHARON RD./EAST GATESWAY Drpark Rd.) across from Walmart - Super Walmart! The early years were difficult for this small community as few people could afford cars so transportation was important for getting around town and doing shopping. However, with development over time things have changed dramatically! Transportation has become increasingly available through public transportation including buses rapid transit service offered by MARC Regional Bus Service (RTS) throughout downtown along Lower State Road 827 which runs between University Drive and I-4 Exit 231A providing easy access from all directions including Universal Studios Resort & theme parks! Lake Wales is located in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 5,593 as of the 2010 census. It is a small town on the west coast of Florida, about 25 miles north of Daytona Beach and 50 miles south of Jacksonville. The name "Lake Wales" comes from the Welsh word for "flourishing." In 1821, General Andrew Jackson and his army invaded England to conquer that country. When they reached Lake Wales, they discovered that its waters were rich in gold ore. As a result, Jackson named the lake after himself and his victory at Horseshoe Bend in 1825. The first post office in Lake Wales was established in 1827. By 1830, there were only 12 dwellings in the town. However, by 1840, there were over 100 residents and five schools had been built downtown. The main industry until the late 1800s was agriculture; however, since railways arrived in this area during the early 1900s (the first railroad to be constructed here), tourism has become one of the town's most important industries. Today, Lake Wales is known for its pretty beaches and white sand beaches along its eastern shoreline which are often used as settings for movies or video games; as well as its history museum which displays artifacts from local businesses and people who have lived or worked here over time
