This became an important commercial artery during the early days of Tampa's growth as a port town. By 1915, Lake Wales Boulevard had become one of Florida's most traveled highways. In 1921, Hurricane Hazel caused extensive damage to coastal towns along Florida's Gulf Coast including Tallahassee and Lake Wales; however, no loss or human fatalities occurred as a result of that storm alone. That year saw also the opening of Lake Wales Regional Airport which served both Tallahassee and much of central Florida until it was closed in 1990 due to cost overruns within its predecessor airport system merging into Airways National Airlines/American Airlines near Jacksonville Beach) During World War II many military barracks were built along with other infrastructure such as roads and airfields around this time period; however none are still extant today due to various factors including changing land uses etcetera Lake Wales Regional Airport reopened on July 14th 1990 after 40 years closed by Aireys National Airlines/American Airlines

Lake Wales was first settled by the Tequestas in the early 1800s. In 1827, part of Florida was acquired from Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris. The area now known as Lake Wales was purchased from Spain and renamed for General James K. Polk, who had played a major role in winning the war against Mexico. The town of Cocoa began to be developed around this time and by 1892, there were over 100 homes and businesses in town. The local paper, the Cocoa Gazette, became one of the most influential newspapers in the area.
