Lake Wales, Florida is a census-designated place located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 362. The lake forms part of the border between Miami and Broward counties. Lake Wales was named by Captain James Cook for his discovery in 1768 while exploring South America. The first white person to live there was Captains John Williams and William Morgan who built a cabin on the south side of the lake in 1776. In 1821, Glynnis Biddle bought 2,500 acres (1 km²) west of where present day Lake Wales is located from Colonel John Troup for $5 per acre ($/km²). It was at this time that Glynnis' property became known as "Biddle's Bog". In 1827 Seminole Chief Osceola agreed to cede all territory east of Lake Wales Creek to US government for $1 per acre ($/km²). This area now included much of what is today Polk County and parts of Miami-Dade and Brevard Counties. In 1828 Cuban refugees fleeing Spanish rule landed on Dry Tortugas island which made landfall about 12 miles (19 km) southeast of present day Lake Wales when their boat overturned near where it still stands today. They were able to subsist on the wild fruits and vegetables available here until they were finally liberated by American forces in 1898 during Cuba's War with Spain. The first house on modern day Grand Avenue was erected in 1886 by Judge Augustus Wylie & Son who also owned Brushy Key Lighthouse which has been operational continuously since 1903.. At this time there were only two houses on Brushy Key Lane - one known as "The Bolles" and another known as "Pineapple Manor". All other properties located within present day Lake Wales boundaries were developed over time including: Cedar Keys Resort Hotel (built 1924), Endless Water Marina (built 1937), Peppermill Resort Hotel & Spa (built 1985), Sunrise Beach Club House( Built 1999), Holiday Inn Express Parkland Beach Resort(Built 2002) along with numerous small businesses catering to fishermen, boaters, tourists and locals alike….. Today many properties within this boundary have been redeveloped into mixed use or residential areas……………. nearly every inch [of land] within these boundaries has been utilized in some way……This once quiet agricultural community now boasts more than 12 thousand residents living aboard 3 hundred vessels moored at its shores!
