In 1938, another local entrepreneur named Floyd Ligon opened his own store on State Road 812 just east of town (now US 1). He was soon followed by other stores throughout central Florida.-- These businesses helped fuel new growth within Lake Wales during those early years when there were still few roads or easy access to shopping malls statewide!

From 1925 until 1970, Lake Wales had two large mills - one operated by Gadsden Brothers and one by Pritchard Bros.
