They built a cabin on the shores of the lake and started trading goods with the local Native Americans. In 1884, Captain Jewett met Mrs. Anna Purdy, who was traveling through Central Florida on her way to visit her sister at Jacksonville. She told Captain Jewett that she had seen an amazing waterfall called The falls of Gainesville on her way down from Tallahassee. When he visited Gainesville later that year, he saw that the falls were actually located on what is now known as Lake Wales Boulevard. Captain Jewett decided to name his new town after Anna Purdy's favorite place in New York City – The Falls of Niagara Falls – so that everyone would know where their town was located! The town quickly started growing and by 1890 there were over 100 people living in Lake Wales! The towns growth continued until 1925 when World War II interfered with development plans for the area. After the war, many houses were destroyed in a fire that burned throughout much of downtown Lake Wales. However, many others were rebuilt and continue to be used today as part of the cultural attractions available in this beautiful community! Today, Lake Wales is one of Florida's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its stunning scenery, rich history, and diverse culture! There are plentyof things to do here including exploring Historic Districts such as Old Town or The Marketplace which features numerous shops and restaurants dating back to 1800s; walking along historic streets such as Jupiter Avenue or Main Street; taking part in Cultural Events like Arts & Lectures or visiting classic golf courses like Stonecrest Golf Club; or spending time at one of itsmany parks such as Crystal Cove Park or Walton Beach Park!
Lake Wales was first settled by the Apalachicola culture in the late 12th century. The area that is now Lake Wales was part of the Spanish Colony of Florida from 1492 to 1821. In 1821, Florida became a United States Territory and in 1928, it became an American state. In 1959, Lake Wales became a city when the towns of Winter Haven and Vero Beach were annexed by Lake Wales.
