Lake Mary is a small, rural town in Broward County, Florida. It was founded in 1892 by J.H. Polk and his wife, Emma. The name “Lake Mary” comes from the Seminole word "alak," meaning “lake of the bear or meneo” because it was once a large body of water near present-day Fort Lauderdale. In 1915, Anna Ladd became the first white woman to live in Lake Mary when she moved from her home in Pompano Beach to rent an office space on Northwest Third Street. Mrs. Ladd's business later became known as A&W Root Beer and served until 1954 when it merged with Coca Cola Company to become one of the world's largest soft drink companies. The town was incorporated on November 3, 1912 by Worthy Hargrave and Sallie Hechtman serving as Mayor and First Lady respectively. On February 14, 1913, post office officials established a new location at Northeast Third Street due to lack of available space at Northeast Second Avenue which had been purchased by Mrs. Ladd for her company store previously mentioned. The temporary building still stands today and is used as the town hall today! In 1925, LakeMary became part of Miami-Dade County after being annexed by that county from Palm Beach County during the same year biannually pursuant to acts passed by Congress under President Harding amending acts entitled "An act concerning certain Possessions within Miami Dade County" (1925). Prior thereto annexation had taken place through individual transactions between counties which were not ratified biannually like Broward/Palm Beach combined into one county pursuant to said act although these two counties shared common facilities such as jails etc . Lake Mary continued to be part of Miami-Dade County until its annexation into Broward County effective January 1st 1959 pursuant to Act No 2339 entitled "Broward annexing portions of Miami Dade and Monroe Counties". As part of this annexation process both towns provided services including fire protection forbrowardcounty residents living within their respective boundaries while also maintaining their separate legislative assemblies providing for local government with equal representation regardless of population size thereby preserving their characteristically unique assets such as congressional districts etc . It is interesting to note that both towns enjoyed consistent economic growth throughout their incorporation periods reaching heights well beyond those experienced by most other municipalities during that time period even though they may have had smaller populations than some others contemporaneously chartered within Broward/Monroe Counties
The first English settlement in the area was on Islamorada Island in 1763. In 1827, three Spanish traders were stranded on the island and set up a trading post. The first journal entry from this post is dated Feb. 10, 1827: "This morning we landed at St Mary's bay, about twelve miles from shore, and found an excellent harbor for our ship." The next year, two more Spanish traders arrived on the island and opened up a store. They also built a fort to protect their trade goods from pirates. By 1830, there were ten English settlers living on the island. In 1838, four more English settlers arrived and started a farming colony. By 1840, there were twenty-eight English settlers living on Lake Mary with some sixty-five Dutch colonists working on the land.
