Maryville became an important stop on the Underground Railroad and many slaves were diverted from slavery to live in Lake Mary. The town's only store closed down in 1951 and most people now live in neighboring Hillsborough or Kissimmee. The name "LakeMary" originated from when residents would call it "MARYVILLE." When a post office was established at this location, they named it after their hometown and not after the river that flows through Citrus County (the name originated with Spanish settlers). The first major development around Lake Mary occurred when a railroad was constructed to connect Tampa Bay with Jacksonville. The company built a depot on the western side of the lake for workers to transfer goods between Tampa and Jacksonville. By 1907, there were several businesses operating around the site including boat docks, hotels, churches and other services needed for freight transportation. In 1951, one of these businesses closed down - making Lake Mary one of the last communities without a commercial center in Florida during that time period! -In 1912, president William Howard Taft visited LakeMary while campaigning for reelection; he enjoyed fishing here as well as playing golf at nearby Gulfstream Park -In 1925 President Calvin Coolidge stopped by too; he had come to visit his wife Eleanor Roosevelt who then resided at Hyde Park In recent years both large cruise ships (Hilton Orlando) use portions of what used to be private land surrounding/adjacent to Lakeshore Community Boat Club where you can rent rowboats or launch kayaks year round There are also several restaurants nearby: Seasons Table & Grill (grilled seafood), Grille du Lac (steakhouse), Fuzzy Wuzzy’s Diner (pizza), ABC Grille( burgers & fries), Southside Joe’s Barbecue( ribs ), Just Add Water Ice Cream( summertime favorite) .
