Lake Mary is a small, freshwater lake located in Polk County, Florida. The name comes from the Seminole word "mary," meaning "honey." The lake was formed by two waterfalls on nearby Hillcrest Mountain. As of the 2000 census, its population was 586. The first people to live in what is now Polk County were the Apalachicola tribe of Native Americans. They hunted and gathered around the falls for honey and other resources. In 1821, Captain John Stoneman discovered gold near present-day Lake Mary while exploring northeast Florida for Spanish traders. He notified the Indian leaders of his find and they began construction of a road to extract wealth from the land. By 1824, some white men had arrived in Polk County and started extracting gold as well. A store was built atHillcrest mountain to sell goods extracted from the ground at high prices to miners who came down from Georgia and Alabama looking for it. In 1828, George Washington Harris opened a general store on East Bayou Road (now US Hwy 494) in what is now downtown Lake Mary with merchandise bought from miners east of Tampa Bay who had come down prospecting for gold during that period of time known asthe Gold Rush. At one point Harris employed 150 people working both day and night! Lake Mary quickly became an important stop on stagecoach routes between Tampa Bay and Jacksonville because it offered easy access to both cities without having to go through Mobile or Pensacola Bayou which were difficult going due to rapids or dangerous spots where boats could be lost or destroyed when crossing them
