Lake Mary is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,557 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South Miami–Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name derives from Spanish mission "Maryo" and Latin "mariana", meaning "Island of Mary." The first European to visit what is now Lake Mary was Juan Ponce de León on his trip from Cuba in 1513. He named it after Saint Mary, patroness of Spain and her homeland. In 1795, Lieutenant Colonel James Ketchum built Fort Moultrie on the site of present-day Miamisburg High School as part of his plan to secure Pensacola Bay for American shipping. A surveyor's error placed Ketchum's fort too far inland on a peninsula instead of on an island near the mouth of Stonington River which would have made it vulnerable to attack by British warships. After years of construction and tests, Moultrie finally opened its gates to the world on July 4, 1814 when Commodore John Foulke landed there with his squadron under Commodore George Washington’s command during Admiral James Cook’s unsuccessful attempt to find a route around Cape Horn. Ketchum had been followed by Captain Nicholas Biddle who sailed into Indian Harbor (the Tampa Bay area today) in search of fresh water before reaching Moultrie beach about 12 miles offshore on December 7, 1794 en route back home from Havana with 350 barrels (approximately )of oil cached aboard ship Hernando De Soto's flagship Castilla.[1] Biddle became known as Father Christmas because he brought presents such as milk and sugarcane to Indians along the TampaBay coast in exchange for goods they could not produce themselves; these boats are still seen at some points along this coastline today called Bogle Passage[2]. When news reached America that General Andrew Jackson had defeated General Jean Baptiste Pointe du Nord at New Orleans – giving control over Gulf Coast Louisiana to Jackson – everyone wanted their share so Foulke offered land grants totaling one million acres (4 square kilometers) for development including this location next to Pensacola Bayou[3]. The town was founded by Captains John Rodgers and Thomas Jennings with crops grown between 1820 and 1830; however salt water intrusion via mangroves forced Jennings outmoded drainage techniques which led directly into Stonington River where sturgeon often spawn during low tide. Water levels rose above Estimated Head Level early 1800s leading Jenkins & Company partners Colston & Sons dredgeboats filled with coal soil mixture worked past high tide annually until 1902 when pumps were added closed off estuary opening up tidal flats below head level again making navigation difficult but also opening up more acreage for farming purposes especially citrus production beginning in 1830s—signaling end demise or slow start anew for small communities developing hereabouts due To Ever Rising Levels Of Saltwater [4][5]."
