Lake Mary is a small, but important body of water located in Polk County, Florida. The name comes from the Seminole word "mary" or "mary's," which means "lake." The area around what is now Lake Mary was first settled by the Creek Indian tribe in the early 1800s. By 1826, the Seminoles had all but destroyed their traditional hunting and fishing grounds in present-day Polk County and were forced to move their people and animals to new sites along the St. Johns River. A group of U.S. officers led by Lieutenant Colonel James Ewing discovered a huge tract of swamp on November 3, 1826, about a mile southeast of what is now Wofford Road. They named it for General James Wilkinson, who had commanded an American brigade at Battle of San Jacinto (1836). Wilkinson donated land for a military outpost called Fort Moselle near modern-day Clearwater Beach on December 1, 1827. The fort was abandoned in 1838 when Spain became involved in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1840, John Wesley Powell became interested in exploring nearby Lake Mary and recommended its location for a canal project he was leading with President Andrew Jackson as part of his plan to create an interstate highway system. On July 6, 1844, Jackson authorized construction of the first section of US Highway 10 from Pensacola to Lake City through Polk County; this route would become State Route 915 today. As development increased around Lake Mary during the late 19th century and into the 20th century, some residents began referring to their community as "The Gables".
