Lake Mary, Florida is a small town in Sarasota County, Florida. It is located on the shore of Lake Mary and it had a population of 5,471 as of the 2000 census. The name comes from an early Spanish explorers' reference to the area as "Mariana." In 1868, General John C. Pemberton named the lake after his wife, Maria Pemberton. Lake Mary was formed by two major floods in 1889 and 1893 that caused heavy tilling along the bottom of Tampa Bay. This created a large area where freshwater could be stored for future use and led to the rise of Lake Mary's water level over time. As a result, agriculture became more important in the community and saw growth until about 1930 when automobiles began making their way into the community and started using irrigation systems to produce crops instead of water for homes and businesses. The first shopping center opened in 1948 which saw growth until 1973 when Sears went out of business. The community then experienced some decline before beginning an upswing in 1994 with increased development around Golf Links Boulevard including apartments, office buildings, a movie theater (now known as Regal Cinemas), additional stores, restaurants, and nightlife options such as strip clubs on nearby Clearwater Beach Boulevard. Growth has continued since then with new housing developments going up around Golf Links Boulevard as well as new retail spaces popping up all around town including one new store just east of Highway 1 near Interstate 275 North which will open later this year calledCENTURY 21 GOLF LIGHTS

In 1892, a group of men from Fort Myers founded the town of Lake Mary on the western edge of the Everglades. The town was named for Virginian General James K. Polk and his wife, Maria Lousiana Perry Polk. The first post office was established in 1893. In 1912, Lake Mary became part of Miami-Dade County.
