Lake Mary is a reservoir in Polk County, Florida. It is located on the eastern border of the county and north of Miami. The area around the lake was originally part of the Apalachicola River valley. The name Lake Mary was given by Colonel James Wilkinson, who surveyed it for the United States in 1827. The first permanent settlers in what is now Polk County were French Canadians who came to Florida as part of a fur trade expedition in 1763. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson sent a force to capture Fort Gaines at Lake Okeechobee and renamed it Camp Jackson after his lieutenant general. In 1840, Congress created Polk County out of land west of Tampa Bay that had been taken from Hillsborough County. The original townsites within modern-day Polk County were Jacksonville (created about 1800), Stonington (1800), and Dunedin (1828). In 1845, Congress approved an act creating Citrus Key as a separate county within Florida so that citrus growers could market their fruit more easily from their isolated island location. That year, developers began building roads and infrastructure necessary for shipping oranges to markets in New Orleans and Charleston. By 1850, there were over 100 businesses operating on Citrus Key; sugar plantations grew up along with several mills used for processing sugar cane into syrup or flour for feeding cattle and other animals. During World War II, most jobs on Citrus Key were military construction projects such as airstrips and tanksparking areas; production ceased much later because lack of demand led to high prices for oranges exported to Europe during wartime years when supplies were scarce domestically. However, small industries continued until after the war when many people left due to economic recession throughout much of southern Florida Today only two restaurants remain open on Citrus Key – one serving fresh seafood items plus beer/wine service daily from 10am-10pm while another sells pizza Tuesday through Sunday morning 9am-3pm

Lake Mary is a small and isolated freshwater lake located in Polk County, Florida. The name comes from the Seminole word "maalik," meaning "large body of water." The area around the present-day site of Lake Mary was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The first European to visit the area was Captain John St. Augustine, who named it for his patron saint, Saint Andrew. In 1824, Colonel James K. Polk purchased land surrounding the lake from a group of Seminoles and began developing it into a citrus plantation. By 1870, Lake Mary had become an important irrigation reservoir for the district that included Tampa and Jacksonville. In 1902, General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived in Tampa Bay to lead American forces in their campaign against Mexico and became interested indeveloping the area around Tampa Bay. During his stay at Clearwater Beachfront Hotel & Casino on Gulfstream Boulevard, he observed natural resources such as fresh water reservoirs and pine trees that could be used to produce munitions needed for World War I. After hearing about Sherman's interest in developing these resources, local businessmen formed a company called Gulfstream Park Development Company to developthe land around LakeMary. This company acquired title to all of the land adjacent to LakeMary within one year after its creation
