At about 6 p.m., General Ewell's force arrived at Mobile Bayou just west of town after marching all day without food or water! A mounted officer discovered an opening in the banks of the bayou so he ordered his men to cross over but when they got too close to swamps some became stuck and drowned while others managed to get back across only to drown again when they tried getting back into the bayou downstream (the " wagon bridge" story). As darkness fell, elements of General Ewell's force stopped short near what is now called Neptune Bridge because there was no way across without being seen by enemy troops lurking nearby - this is where reports say that one Confederate soldier dropped his sword into water so it would look like he had been lost during the crossing). After almost four hours march, General Ewell finally arrived at Jacksonville around 11 p.m.. He found news agencies had already reported his defeat at Battle of Selma which ended Union control over Alabama (Ewell retreated south then surrendered at Raystown Massacre two days later). Lake Mary is a large, man-made body of water located in central Pinellas County, Florida. The name originated from the Seminole word "alakalā," meaning "sacred place." The lake was created by developers in the early 1900s as a way to water their land during dry times. Today, Lake Mary is one of the most popular tourist destinations in central Florida. The park that now surrounds the lake was first established in 1889 as a rural community called Allenton. By 1907, Allenton had been annexed by Pinellas County and renamed Lake Mary after General James “Jimmie” Lee, who served as military governor of Florida during World War II. As time went on, other names were given to the lake - such as Clearwater and St Petersburg - but it remained officially known as LakeMary until 1959 when it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. LakeMary has undergone many changes over its history. In 1915, developers built a dam on the east side of the lake for use in irrigation purposes; however, this scheme quickly proved unworkable because of high winds and low flows from nearby springs. A new dam was built downstream in 1935 and again enlarged in 1952; both dams remain in operation today. During World War II, more than 20 tanks were used at Camp Hammond on site; today only five concrete tanks remain from that era which can be toured through exhibits inside campgrounds adjacent to the lakeshore area where they once stood (see photo). In 1968, residents of Allenton petitioned county commissioners to name the park after local WWII veteran Colonel Roy Komericki; however, due to lack of approval from top officials within Pinellas County government, Komericki's name never received official recognition until 1999 when it was added to the State Historical Museum Cataloging System under Headlines: America’s Forgotten Veterans]. In recent years there have been several efforts made to preserve or restore some aspects of LakeMary's past including renovation projects at various campsites along its shores (see map), restoration work done at Camp Hammond (now closed) which served as an airfield during WW2 and later operations at nearby Fort Myers Naval Air Station which housed Allied forces during Operation Overlord (the Normandy invasion).
