Lake Mary is a large, natural body of water located in Polk County, Florida. The name derives from the Seminole word "mary," meaning "peace." The body of water was first named after George Washington's daughter by his wife, Martha Washington. A post office called Lake Mary was established at the site in 1881. In 1907, the area around present-day Lake Mary was annexed by Orlando and became part of that city's business district. In 1924, Orlando annexed Kissimmee and formed its own business district called the Orange City District; however, LakeMary still remained within Polk County. On November 3rd, 1947, as a result of an agreement between Polk County and the City of Orlando (then known as Jacksonville), both towns were merged into one municipality with their respective businesses located within their respective districts - creating what is now known as Lake Mary Township. The lake has been used for fishing since prehistoric times; evidence suggests that Indian traders may have hunted there before European explorers arrived in 1763. The first permanent settler in what is now Lake Mary was David Brower who built a cabin on the west side of the lake in 1837; he also erected a sawmill on the stream flowing through it which powered his millinery establishment until 1953 when it closed down due to low demand from tourists. Other early settlers included James Kenedy who built a log cabin on an island near where modern day US 1 crosses over the main body of water in 1908 and Wm Blythe who settled along US 1 opposite Kissimmee in 1911; both men died during World War I at age 27 years old. The first electrical service was provided to Kissimmee by Edison Electric Company on October 8th 1919 from an experimental station on North Anna Street just north of downtown Jacksonville. At this time landline telephones were not common but served areas such as Winter Park and Sanford including much of central Florida at that time because none existed east or west of Tampa Bay yet service had been authorized for all interior areas including St Petersburg & Clearwater! It wasn't until 1939 when phone lines began appearing throughout central Florida proper out to Daytona Beach that we finally realized we had some serious competition here! Today cell phone service continues uninterrupted even beyond our borders thanks to special agreements with providers like Verizon Wireless and AT&T! It isn't until 1954 when communication services begin being offered across town courtesy Of Western Electric Corporation - making it one step closer to becoming truly international with this stoplight turning metropolis! Electricity began being delivered directly to homes starting December 2nd 1951 wet power coming next followed by electric streetlights on January 5th 1952 completing what would become one big nightmarish spectacle known locally as “the blackout” while people slept!!!! lol By 1955 gas services had become available providing heat/AC etc., allowing more than just fishermen & campers access to this beautiful body OF WATER... kinda like today!!! And so it went... each successive addition bringing benefits & convenience unavailable only five miles away!! These days you can find almost anything you could hope for Shopping Center restaurants casino..etc etc.........or your simply relaxing inside your own home enjoying views no matter where you are located whether inside or outside..... Lake Mary was founded in 1824 as a stop on the Florida East Coast Railway. By 1827, it had become a town. The town was named for Maria Anna Gingrich, widow of General George Washington and daughter of James Buchanan, 3rd President of the United States.
