It closed its doors in 1984; however, it has been occupied intermittently as a home storage unit, restaurant and nightclub since then. The name "Lake Mary" is derived from "Lakes meadow", meaning "meadow near the water" or "lake made by meadow". The name first appeared on maps in 1778 when Captain James Cook visited this region while exploring new lands south of Key West. After consulting with local leaders who knew about and used this natural treasure, he recommended naming it after Lady Alice Putnam's dowry: twenty thousand acres (8 km²) surrounding present day LakeMary were given to the state of Florida by Alice's husband Colonel John Campbell for development into what is today known as Orange County. The putnam family had originally come from England but settled permanently in America around 1800 where they prospered as farmers and merchants. They also became involved politically with both Democratic and Republican Parties through their years serving as members or directors from various counties throughout New York State before moving westward to become part of Florida following Seminole Indian Wars fought between British colonists and Native Americans east of Tampa Bay beginning in 1763. ThePutnams adopted American culture very quickly adapting their language, dress, food habits etc., becoming one of many Thoroughbred families who arrived across America at that time preceded only by those originating among European aristocracy such as the Bushes, Carnegies and Rothschilds. Families like the Putnams prospered because they took advantage of opportunities created by waves of immigrants flooding into North America during what was known as the Great Awakening period – people seeking religious freedom under President George Washington – followed by a more restrictive period under King George III during which slavery increased significantly within British coloniespracticed throughout much of Europe including North America although abolitionism began spreading rapidly throughout English society some 20 years earlier following William Wilberforce's successful campaign against slave trade Laws enacted during this time led eventually to emancipation all over Britain starting with runaway slaves within Massachusettsbayou St Johns parish prior to that point considered free territory administered jointly between French & Spanish colonial authorities along Pensacola River valley immediately adjacent thereto including present day Clearwater Beach & portions bordering St Petersburg Municipality included hereinbelow hereinbelow herebybe called [Florida] Territory thenceforward subject exclusively thereto…. On July 4th 1836 Captain James Cook again discovered land lying southwestwardly 2d degree latitude below East Point[Orlando], being an extensive level plain nearly 600 miles long By breadth 70 Miles wide….the whole extent thereof comprehending within its boundaries a quantity not less than 16000 Acres…..Captain Cook named it Land`y Islands after his friend SirGeo[rge] Vere de la Beche who surveyed these parts for him……..This was probably accomplished either before or soon after Captains Cook departed our coast…In 1881 Major General Hernando De Soto explored this area along with Lieutenant Governor David Batee while accompanying General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna on his expedition against Mexico City commanded by Lopez Bonilla….. Lt Col Samuel Pritchard US Army cavalry Commander attached participated also landed At Fort Walton Beach On October 5th 1881 accompanied Gen Pedro Menéndez y Torre upon his Expedition Against Campeche From December 15th To January 1st 1882 In company With Col Fenton Mckenzie US Infantry First Sergeant
