Lake Mary was named for General James K. Polk, who served as the 34th President of the United States from 1849 to 1857. The name comes from a Spanish word meaning "a place where the trees grow." The first Europeans to visit Lake Mary were Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1513 and his crew of five ships. A landing party led by explorer Juan Ponce de Leon in 1523 also visited this area. In 1764, Frenchman René-Jacques Cartier explored and charted the area which would become Lake Mary. He called it La Belle Ame (the beautiful land). The state's first governor, John Crain, designated what is now Polk County as part of Jacksonville County on November 14th of that year. On January 6th, 1865, during Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address as president, he said: "I have never hesitated to use all proper means to secure its admission into our Union; but I am not ignorant that some people hereabouts hold an opposite view thereto – that our country should be divided among ourselves – and I do not want Jacksonville County to become a part of any such conspiracy." During World War 2, many Floridians volunteered their time and services in uniform either through combat or labor camps across America. Many Floridians lost their lives during the war including Air Force ace Billy Bishop and veteran truck driver Hernando DeSoto III.
