In 1835, Captain John Taggart founded the town on land purchased from the tribe. The first post office was established in 1837, and in 1841, Lake City became a city. In 1925, Lake City became an incorporated municipality and remained so until 1959 when it merged with neighboring Gainesville to form Gainesville-Lake City combined municipality. As of 2006, there are 916 residents living in LakeCity-Gainesville combined municipality which is about one-seventh of all residents residing in Polk County. The main industries in LakeCity are agriculture (farming), manufacturing (steel Making and plastics), tourism (boating/kayaking/swimming), and service sectors such as banking and health care. In 2010, overall median household income was $75,046 while poverty rates were 10%. There are many attractions located within or nearby LakeCity including: the Gainesville Aquarium; oldgrowth forests; historical buildings;UFC Fight Night arena;and several amusement parks including Six Flags Over Georgia (where water park features include a Pirates of Caribbean attraction) as well as a variety of restaurants andstores

Lake City, Florida was first settled in 1845 by Colonel John C. Butler and his family. The community was named for the large body of water that surrounded it at the time. The town's growth can be traced back to two main factors: Jackson County's numerous rivers and creeks that supplied water for farming and drinking purposes, as well as General Joe Wheeler's decision in 1865 to build upJacksonville into what would become one of America's most important urban centres. The first white settler in Lake City was General Joe Wheeler himself who arrived in 1865 after successful military campaigns against Seminoles throughout central Florida. After several years of hard work he founded what would become known as Wheeler’s Landing on the east bank of Jupiter River (later renamed FlagLERoad). This landing provided fresh water for irrigation along with food storage for local farmers and soonJacksonville had enough water supplies to support itself without reliance onWheeler’s Landing or other sources outside of town. By 1900s much of modern day Lake City had been built up around Wheeler’s Landing including what is now downtown which contained both general store and post office buildings; also numerous homes were erected along Jupiter Riverbank between FlagLERoad/University Drive and Eldorado Street where today you can still find some old farmstead architecture dating back to this time period This growth led to increased demand on land within town limits which forced citizens to start developing new areas such as West End (now Northgate) off University Drive northwest of downtown which developed into one of Jacksonville’s most prominent neighbourhoods during this time period . These developments helped make LakeCity one of Jacksonville’s most vibrant communities while also helping contribute towards its rapid growth over the ensuing decades . In addition to its growing population status, another major factor contributing towardsLakeCity’s success during this era was its location – just northwestofJacksonville across Geneva Road from Chattahoochee Bay – giving residents easy access bothtoJupiter River for fishing andtotheinternationalwaterwayCrossingFloridaBayfor boatingandfishing trips
Lake City, Florida was founded in 1892 by J.B. Wetherbee and named for the city of Jacksonville, Florida. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the major trade route between Tampa and Jacksonville. In 1924, Lake City became a city and was renamed for Dr. John Foust, who had served as the first president of Gulf Coast Hospital System. In 1951, Lake City was annexed by Jacksonville and renamed again for Dr. John Foust Jr., who had also been the first Mayor of Jacksonville.
