Lake City is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Weeki Wachee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Lake City were two families from Georgia who started a sawmill there in 1837. By 1840, the town had a post office and three stores. In 1852, an act of Congress designated it as the seat of Seminole County and made it its county seat. The first courthouse was built in 1857 and remained in use until 1912 when it was replaced by the present building. In 1907, William Cavanaugh donated land to build a state park on which Lake City State Park now stands. The original town hall building burned down in 1951 but was rebuilt and enlarged with new offices and a gymnasium inside it – still used today as the town hall. In 1916, famed architect Norman Mailer moved to Lake City from Hollywood to begin work on his major project for Stetson University – one of only two colleges at that time located outside of New York City (the other being Columbia University). Mailer's "Orlando" campus would eventually be called Mailer Student Village after him. During World War II, much of downtown LakeCity was destroyed by bombing raids; however, most buildings were repaired or rebuilt over time including both the old schoolhouse which still stands today (now used as apartments) and the Town Hall which became home to city government for many years before becoming known as the Municipal Building again following Hurricane Irma’s damage last year. Lake City was founded in 1824 by a group of pioneers led by Captain James Wilkinson.
