The first permanent settlement in what would become Lake City was made on December 5, 1824 by Captain John Stiles and his crew of HMS "Devonshire" after they discovered an active trade route between Havana and Tampa Bay. The original town site was located on the east bank of the Miami River, between present-day Washington Street and Fort Lauderdale Boulevard. On October 20, 1828, when Spanish settlers arrived in what would become Lake City from Cuba, they named it Cubasia because of its location on a small island in the river. In 1831–32 Jacksonville entrepreneur George Rogers founded Rogersville on Pensacola Bayou near present-day downtown Jacksonville to provide goods for Cuban traders travelling along this route to sell sugarcane to English merchants in North America. Rogersville became known as one of the earliest centers of American slave trade activity west of the Mississippi River. By 1840, much of what is now Lake Citrus had been developed as citrus groves around four: Magnolia Road (present day US 1), Park Boulevard (now State Road A1A), Indian Harbour Drive (now US 1), and Sugar Grove Avenue (now I-95). By 1850 citrus production had increased so greatly that a new city government was needed; accordingly, on April 14th of that year a charterwas issued for "Lake City". The first Mayor was Aldermen Jno.[?] Henson (later James) Larkin and Josiah Gregg – both descendants of early settlers who had come downriver from Virginia about 1800. On September 16th1851the organization took place for incorporation with a meeting being held at which Wm[?], Jno [?] Henson(joint mayor)and Captn Fenton were elected Directors

Lake City was a small town in Polk County, Florida, on the eastern border of Hillsborough and Pasco counties. The community was located on the east side of Lake City Lake, which formed when it was combined with part of Hernando County to form the new county in 1907. Despite its name, there was never a city at least partially within the limits of Lake City. The first permanent settler in what is now Lake City was John Crouch who built a log cabin on an island in the lake in 1836. In 1837 another pioneer named James Riddle settled near where present day Interstate 75 crosses the lake. A year later Capt. George Stephenson founded a ferry terminal here for shipping goods from Tampa to Jacksonville and Indian Key through the lake-crested region. Stephenson's Ferry served as one of only two crossing points over the icefield that separate Hillsborough from Pasco Counties until 1912 when US 98 became concurrent with US 1 and US 27 closed these routes leaving Lake City without any commercial crossings between Hillsborough and Pasco Counties. In 1851 G W Goode platted what is now downtown (the site of today's KFC) along North Main Street and West State Road 12 as an agricultural township called "Goode." He donated land to make up part of what is now Polk County; this included most of modern-day downtown including Goode Park which still stands today thanks to his donation. It wasn't until after Goode's death that his land became reality as modern-day Polk County courthouse sits on some property he donated back in 1892 just south of downtown across from Goode Park. Thanks to Goode's Donation much if not all streets/locations within downtown are original oradais dating back to this time period including Second Avenue which leads from downtown directly into Polk County Government Center - still standing today! During World War II, many people worked for General Motors plant at nearby Pascagoula while others lived around town during peacetime because there were no paved roads or schools within reach outside cities like Tampa or Jacksonville for those working near Fort Myers Beach / Pascagoula Naval Air Station / GM Plant - except for those living near Dodgeville off I-75 northwest of town Limitsgridlines
