Lake City experienced rapid growth following World War II when thousands of veterans returned home and began streaming into the city looking for work opportunities. Construction began on three major roadways which defined modern-day downtown: US 1/US 98 (now State Road 8), US 11/SR 801 (now State Road 9), and SR 85/SR 111 (now Interstate 495).
