By 1990, Lake City had shrunk to its current size of 2,500 residents due to suburban growth around it. However, annexation has not stopped; in 2002 and 2006 both cities added adjacent communities of Port Charlotte and Clearwater Beach totaling 4,063 residents within their borders. The economy of Lake City is based on agriculture (primarily corn), tourism (especially during the summer months), manufacturing (particularly aluminum cans and toy trucks), and light industry such as retail services and construction materials. On November 20th 1925 fire destroyed all but three structures within five blocks of downtown including Mayor Levy's office building which would become known as "The Gables".< ref="" /> However due to insurance money paid by business owners post-fire damage totaled $527 ($ when adjusted for inflation) Mayor Levy quickly rebuilt using materials available at his disposal such as salvaged wood and bricks instead of buying new materials like most cities would do at that time.
One interesting event about this time period was when Sheriff Jens Petersen arrived early Wednesday morning January 25th 1912 after hearing rumors someone might have dynamited tree near WPLF transmitter site just outside town limits during election night not long after becoming lawman Sheriff Petersen called an emergency meeting with all township leaders where they decided not to pursue any charges either way because no evidence could be found. Lake City is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded on November 1, 1837 by Major General James K. Polk and his wife Anna Maria Boyd as a strategic location for military encampments on the mouth of the St Johns River near present-day Sanford. In 1839, major General Andrew Jackson's army camped there during their failed campaign against Seminole Indians; it was also here that he learned to ride horses and fight from John Cushing. In 1841, Polk assigned Captain David Fenton of Jacksonville to build a wharf on the east side of Lake City in order to bring goods into town from outlying counties and selling them at local merchants. The first store built in Lake City was called Fenton's store and served as a model for later stores across the state which were built with brick or timbered construction techniques. In 1865, Mayor Thomas Auld donated land adjacent to downtown for municipal use; this included an alley running north-south between High Street and Euclid Avenue which became known as "Auld Alley". On October 25th of that year, Mayor Auld dedicated what is now termed "The Auld Adobe" located at 7th Avenue North (now US 301) to commemorate this event.During World War II over 100 factories were produced in Lake City including 20 by Boeing Company alone producing munitions such as bombs, shells and fighter jets using Long Beach Island Naval Shipyard facilities nearby between 1942-1945 On May 15th 1944 an amphibious assault task force led by Admiral William Halsey landed at Red Beach on Clearwater Bay then marched inland through village streets toward Fort Pierce beach where they set up their headquarters before moving Southwest alongshore towards Boca Raton Harbor where they rendezvoused with Task Force 54 under Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz who had been leading Operation Neptune's Spear – codenamed Haltom Gulf – an amphibious assault drive into Leyte Gulf which began on April 10th 1945 when American forces bombedolled off Samaritan Islands while Japanese forces attacked small island group Formosa
