The first shooting at a gun range took place in 1895. Gun ranges were opened throughout the early 1900s, and by 1925 there were seventeen active rifle ranges within a two-mile radius of Lake City. In 1935, the National Rifle Association (NRA) purchased land adjacent to J.B. Higgins Shooting Park on North Second Street and began to build an indoor range on it; this allowed for the open air shooting of rifles that had not been possible before. In 1948, NRA members voted to erect a 100-foot steel structure called The Tower which served as both a target platform and training ground for shooters from all over America. The tower was destroyed during Hurricane Andrew in 1992 but its steel frame still stands as a historical landmark in downtown Lake City today

Today, Lake City is home to several businesses and schools, including Lakeshore High School which offers programs leading to graduation from college or university; Josephine College; South Florida University; and LakeCity Marina which allows fishing, boating, swimming, jet skiing, snowboarding and other activities on over 100 acres of waterfront property with a heated pool and children's play areas
