The city would grow rapidly during its first few decades as it became an important transportation hub for settlers travelling between Central Florida and Tampa Bay. In 1907, Fort Myers was annexed into LakeCity while Sarasota was annexed in 1912. As both municipalities grew larger, they began developing separate infrastructure needs such as schools, hospitals, fire departments and other essential services not available within their respective borders - this led to duplication of services within each municipality until finally a merger occurred in 1973 which combined all three municipalities into one entity under the name of LakeCity et al., Incorporated

The city experienced rapid growth after it was made an incorporated municipality in 1889. By 1912, Lake City had become one of Florida's largest cities with a population of over 100,000. The city played a central role in political life in Florida during the 1920s and 1930s, and hosted several major political events including the 1932 Democratic National Convention and the 1939 Republican National Convention. In 1949, Lake City reverted to its original name - Lake City is home to several popular tourist attractions, including downtown's Art Deco buildings and Palace Theatre; Asbury Park's amusement park; Saint Augustine's castillo de San Marcos; and Flagler County's first golf course, Pinehurst Country Club.
