Lake City is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lake City's namesake is Lake Okeechobee which forms its eastern border. The main thoroughfare in and around town is US-441, which bisects the town center between US-2 (towards Orlando) to the north and US-9 (south) to the south. The downtown area features a mix of commercial and residential buildings dating back to before World War II. On the east side of US-441 lies University Boulevard which connects downtown with several colleges and universities in central Florida including Rollins College, FSU, USF,and Miami University. The first settler in what would become Polk County was De Witt Coleman who arrived on horseback from Georgia in 1836. By 1840 he had built a cabin on what would become Main Street in what is now Lake City. In 1845 John Hinson purchased land at present day Centre Avenue and Main Street for $10 per acre from Coleman’s grandson Isaac Hinson Hinson laid out a townsite called “Lake City” on his property on October 10th 1846 which included current day Main Street, North Center Avenue (now Amway Blvd), East Center Avenue (now Northwest Drive), South Center Avenue (now WestCenter Avenue), Russell Road and Green Oaks Drive today known as Southcenter Parkway He named it after Okeechobee Creek which ran through his property adjoining that of President James Kenedy . After building two homes there for himself and his family he went into business serving customers by wading into Okeechobee Creek to scoop up clamshells or catch frogs when it was low tide . A post office was established at “Lake City” on December 17th 1850 by Jno Hopkins with Wm Henson as mail carrier On January 3rd 1861 Jno Hopkins sold all his interests in “Lake City” to Captn Mosely Bowen who renamed it “Orlando” It remained under Bowen until 1865 when it became part of Seminole County . In 1897 Dr J Broughton bought land adjacent to what is now Orange Park Rd from Captn Mosely Bowen . He named it after him – LakeCityFM Radio Station began operations broadcasting from this location December 14th 1951 .) When Orange Park Rd straightened out following an earth Quake Missioner found evidence of ancient masonry located near intersection of Orange Park Rd & Harrison Ave near Satellite TV antennas ) This led to many businesses moving their establishments northeast on Harrison Ave NW along satellite TV antennas until about 2005 when most moved back onto Old Neshoba Rd where they have been ever since

Lake City is a city in Polk County, Florida. The population was 13,913 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Lake City were Native American traders and hunter-gatherers who traveled through the area when it was a part of the Chokolahumka River watershed. They hunted deer, bear, and turkey while living off the land. When white settlers began arriving in this region during the early 1800s they encountered these same natives and started trading with them for goods such as clothing, tools, food, and horses. By 1821 there were over 100 white settlers living in what is today Lake City. In 1828 Captain John Stroud founded Fort Stroud on land that he had purchased from the local tribe of Seminole Indians. This fort served as a military post until 1837 when it was decommissioned due to lack of troops and resources. In 1837 Englishman Jamesur Wright arrived in Florida looking for new lands to explore. He heard about an abandoned village called Wakulla just west of present day Lake City on the Chattahoochee River which he thought would be a good place to start his new colony because of its strategic location between two major rivers (the Chattahoochee and Georgia). Wright set up shop near Wakulla but quickly ran out of food supplies and water so he returned home without having any physical settlements established in Florida at that time. However, after some years of restless speculation by other colonists about their possible future locations Wright finally decided on LakeCity as his new capital city because its advantages included excellent road connections to both Tampa and Jacksonville; access to natural resources like sugarcane orchards; easy access by boat from nearby Tampa Bay; and its central location within Polk County which allowed him to control much valuable real estate including land grants from former Indian chiefs
The city of Lake City was founded by settlers in 1853. The first post office was established in 1855, and the city received its charter from the Florida Legislature on July 1, 1861. In 1872, the city's first fire department was organized, and in 1895 it became a full-time municipality. In 1920, the City of Lake City annexed the adjacent town of Cutlertown.
