In 1881, Gainesville developer James Haughton purchased 3,000 acres (1,600 hectares), east of town on State Road A1A, for $5 per acre ($40 per km²). He named the property "Lake City" after his hometown of Glasgow in Scotland. At around the same time as Haughton's purchase, citrus growers began planting oranges and other crops on what is now northwest corner lot #2 in central Lake City. By 1902, there were 20 fruit orchards located near present-day intersection of Northwest 14th Street and US 92nd Avenue; 10 belonged to JB White & Brothers fruit Packers and 10 were owned by Abram Wofford & Bros., a druggist who also ran a grocery store on Northwest 14th Street between NW Second Avenue and NW Third Avenue (later known as 7th Ave.). At about this time there also began construction on what would become downtown Lake City: First Baptist Church was built on Northeast Fourth Street in 1903; Mayor Harry Pace's Administration Building was completed northeast of First Baptist Church in 1907; and the present day municipally-owned police department building was erected northeast of First Baptist Church across from Seventh Ave.: This complex included a jail cells/police headquarters used as a recruitment office during World War I until it became surplus property returned to government ownership after the war; Parkland High School opened its doors September 15, 1909 with grades 9 through 12 classes inside Armour Elementary School across from Parkland Memorial Hospital while Drury High School opened its doors October 27th with grades 8 through 11 classes inside Drury Elementary School across from Armour Elementary School.
