When Tampa Bay was created as an unincorporated area in 1924, there were only two ways to get across the bay: by land or by boat. The choice was clear; land would be less expensive and transportation would be faster but boats were more efficient and could travel farther down the river without being stopped by rocks or rapids. So, in 1925, developers purchased 2400 acres of land on both sides of the river for $1 per acre (this is still an affordable price today). They began construction on what would become one of Florida’s most successful business ventures: A combined sewage plant/industrial complex known as “Shackleton Park” which employed over 100 workers at its peak in 1951! Shackleton Park remains one of Jacksonville’s most iconic landmarks today! After years of hard work and engineering brilliance from his team at Shackleton Park, Harry Chandler developed what would become known as “The Mills” development on State Road 509 south near downtown Jacksonville. This project was designed to create thousands of jobs for people living inJacksonville Beach alone! Unfortunately for Chandler and his team however, World War II intervened and production at The Mills ceased shortly thereafter due to lack of war materials….but not before leaving behind a lasting legacy! Today you can find remnants from this project all around town including some beautiful homes that are now considered historical landmark #1!!! As if that weren’t enough though…..the banks that once lined State Road 509 have since been replaced by shopping malls!!!!!! What?!? How did this happen? And why???? Let’s take a closer look… In 1948 when both towns metamorphosed into Jaguars they decided upon merger criteria which included common interests such as commerce & industry along with services like education & fire service sharing resources etc
Lake City was founded by Captain John McCoy in 1827. In 1847, it was renamed Jacksonville after the United States Congress passed a resolution to that effect. The first post office in Lake City was established in 1851. Jacksonville became the county seat of Duval County in 1857 and Lake City got its present name from being the only incorporated town on the Florida Gulf Coast. The city's population reached 100,000 by 1910. It closed its doors for good in 1925 and has not reopened since then.
