The first post office was established atlakecity on November 3, 1840; it remained open until May 6, 1853 due to postal problems caused by Creek Indian raids that occurred along the Gulf Coast during the Mexican–American War. A depot serving as an early trading center between Jacksonville and Tampa was built nearpresent-day intersection of US301/SR 528 (now First Street) and Meetinghouse Road NW (later Park Avenue NE), but it burned down in 1865 while being rebuilt following a fire that destroyed most of downtown Jacksonville In 1861 Confederate General Braxton Bragg made landfall near present day Jacksonville after traveling through Texas before invading Mexico; he called for volunteers to fight for him against American forces under Ulysses S. Grant which resulted in over 60% male enrollment at Fort Union Academy – also located within modern-day Jacksonville – where he planned to raise Confederate troops After the American Civil War ended on April 9th 1865 local government resumed operations with a new form known as "the city" which included all unincorporated areas east of US 301/SR 528 excepting those belonging to Putnam County which formed part of Jeffersonville until 1895 when they were annexed into Polk County . On December 12th 1865 John White died at age 90 years after leading his family from their original cabin northeast across county lines settling finally within Jacksonvillle

By 1870, there were six businesses in town and $2,500 in receipts from sales of goods. A post office was established at Lake City in 1872 and mail service began operations that year. In 1886, an electric light company was organized and by 1888 had installed ten lights downtown. In 1901, Interurban Railway Company built a line from Tampa toLakeCity which became operational that year. The company operated until 1915 when it merged into Florida Southern Railway organization
