Lake City is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Lake City was Wm.C. Phelps and his family who arrived on October 10, 1835 from Kentucky. They named their new home "New Jerusalem". Phelps built a log cabin on the east side of present day Main Street and started farming land around it in 1840. He also developed a mill that operated until 1846 when he sold it to Elisha Cuthbert and others for $1,000. In 1851 Phelps married Mary Alice Wilkinson and they moved to Live Oak Swamp near where they now live on Old US Highway 41 (now State Road 4). They had six children: Edward P., Mary A., Hugh H., Anna L., William S., and Louisa M.. In 1865 Jno Bigham bought someImproved land south of present day Lakeshore Drive which he called "Bigham's Landing" because he had purchased it from John Baptist Baird one year earlier for $5 per acre (). Bigham developed this property into what is now known as Bigham Heights (). This name was changed to Lake City in 1899 when the city government acquired most of the remaining unincorporated land within its boundaries from Jno Bigham’s widow initially for only $2 per acre (). In 1898 Mayor James Rolph donated two lots adjacent to New Jerusalem Cemetery towards what would become downtown Lake City; these two lots were later combined with Lots 1-3 along present day Main Street so that today’s main shopping district can be found between those two Streets/. The donation made possible the construction of the first municipal building in city limits: The Catoctin Savings Bank Building () which still stands today as one of downtown's most popular tourist attractions! That same year saw another milestone for Lake City when an agreement was struck by representatives from Jacksonville, Miami Beach, Stuart and St Petersburg – underwritten by millionaire Samuel Goldwyn – to build an electric Railway through central LakeCity linking those communities together via tracks running northeast/southwest from Liberty Park across Broadwalk Avenue (later renamed Roosevelt Boulevard) until just past Spanish Fort then northeasterly onto Congress Avenue before finally terminating at opposite ends at First National Bank Square (). On November 14th, 1898 Mayor Rolph dedicated this grandiose undertaking with much fanfare right here within our very own municipally-owned building! Philadelphia businessman & real estate magnate Samuel Goldwyn followed suit less than three months later with his equally extravagant gift of 50 acres adjoining Gadsden Beach offering free access to all water facilities theretofore reserved exclusively for Jaguars! How could we not take note?! And so began “The Great days of lakecity’s history” according to many old timers! Of course back then everything just happened Quick & Easy like they do nowadays… So there you have it folks – Another reason why we love living hereabouts….. It has been said that during prohibition times prices went up 400% due to demand by bootleggers / smugglers
