The first permanent English-speaking settlers in what is now Lake City were three brothers from the town of Moncks Corner in North Carolina who founded a trading post there in 1824. They named their new settlement after their home town of Clifton Forge, Virginia. The post office and first store were opened on July 7, 1825. In 1827, John Wesley Powell and his surveyors discovered an extensive salt water lake lying to the northwest of present-day Lake City and labeled it "Lake George" becauseGeorge Washington Keyes had surveyed that area for British East India Company traders in 1784 while serving as a captain with the militia under General James Kettlesborough.. The brothers sold their holdings in Lake City to Powell and his partners for $8 per acre; however they retained ownership of the lakeshore posts until sold off again by them to Donatis & McNaught in 1865. In 1886, construction began on White Bluff Plantation which would become one of America's most famous plantation houses – designed by Atlanta architect Samuel French Wilson and built by general contractor Jethro Bowen Price over a period of twenty years starting in 1875–1887 for wealthy white American landowner Isaac Nisbet Payne Sr.. Payne moved into White Bluff during World War I when he received permission from then President Grover Cleveland to use it as a military hospital during the war effort. Many celebrities such as First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt were guests at White Bluff during its heyday including movie stars Harry Belafonte and Gary Cooper as well as Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.; however today only some portions of White Bluff remain standing including parts ofthe mansion which are now used as apartments within Forest Hills Village development near Gulf Breeze Boulevard (later Gulfstream Park). The plantation complex was razed around 1950s due to environmental concerns about its excessive lead paint levels but some pieces have been preserved thanks to donations from descendants like actor/director Forrest Tucker and author Toni Morrison.–Today much attention is paid to restoration efforts at White Bluffs which are ongoing since 2009 led by volunteer group Save Our Heritage

Lake City is an small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first known permanent settler in what is now Lake City was James Fenton who arrived on a steamboat from Mobile in 1836 and named it after his friend and business partner General John C. Cleburne. The community's growth began with the construction of a railroad line through Polk County in the early 1870s, which created demand for goods and services available only outside of Jacksonville. By 1884, Lake City had absorbed all but one of the six settlements within its original boundaries - four years later it would annex another settlement to its north. One of the earliest businesses in town was J&J laundry fame founded by John Jernigan & Son (1859-1927) adjacent topresent day Second Street/LakeCity Boulevard on land that once housed a sawmill and grist mill used to produce flour for Jacksonville’s early grocery stores and other local businesses. Other early residents included Atherton brothers G W (1863-1926), William P (1865-1934), Rudolph H (1868-1944), Jesse L (1871-1945) & Harry S(? - ?) who each donated land for Village Hall which opened in 1913; Drinker family members Mabel E(? - ?) & Ida B.(? - ?) also contributed money towards building new public buildings including schoolhouse, jail and Ladies Home Club Building completed 1915; Post Office operated until 1920 when it moved into new building constructed on present day First Street/Boulevard opposite Union Chapel Church; Mrs Kappeler donated land for beautiful ladies home which became Women’s Annexes clubhouse following donation by Mrs Nellie Kappeler during 1918 centennial celebration In 1905 Jacksonville voters approved annexation of Citrusville to form an even more populous city with its own election board, police department and fire department as well as incorporation as Lake City Township under then Governor Atherton Fitzhugh Jones Lake Cities population reached 2,000 by 1910 however rapid growth halted abruptly after World War I when many men left for military service or went off to fight abroad Population Growth resumed rapidly due to waves of immigration beginning around 1930 thru 1940 primarily Poles arriving seeking work opportunities in newly conquered Poland while others came postwar looking for friends or relatives already living here During this time much architectural renovation took place including addition of two large brick churches – First Presbyterian Church built 1932 with $5,- 000 raised by Memorial Day parade attended by thousands followed by St Joseph Catholic Church 1937 addition funded largely through gifts from Atlantics families via reunion meetings held at various locations across state during late 1930’s thru early 1940’s resulting in largest ever Polish American architecture fundraiser . In 1933 new schools were erected – Boys High School 1935 girls high school both designed by local architect Elmer Roddenberry . All three schools were closed within 5 years due to budgetary problems ensuing from Great Depression . The post office closed effective January 1st 1944 ..... Today only two contributing bricks remain from original structure dating back to 1915

The area that now includes Lake City was first settled by Alachua and Seminole Indians in the 18th century. The town of Lake City was founded on February 10, 1851 by James W. McDonald and others as a result of an agreement between the United States and Spain to trade goods for Seminole prisoners being held in Cuba. In 1903, the Miami and Tampa Railroad built a line from downtown Miami to Lake City, which led to increased business for the city's merchants. In 1907, both cities merged into one with their present-day boundaries as part of a larger land deal that also included Riverview Park in Pinellas County and parts of today's Tallahassee and Jacksonville counties. Lake City has seen many changes over its history: it became an important center for cotton production during the late 19th century; after World War II it became home to various military installations; during the 1990s it experienced rapid growth as a result of new development around Interstate 488 (later renamed I-4), which connected LakeCity with several large metropolitan areas across central Florida; however, recent trends have shown decreasing economic activity and increasing crime rates in the city.
