His widow continued to live here with her children until they moved out some years later when they acquired other lands around Fort Myers proper and sold all but one acre (0.8 ha) of this original parcel back to Price's heirs In 1841 James Hickey purchased part of this same tract from Price’s widow for $200 and erected thereon an logs cabin being called "Hickey House" or "Cabin No 1". It remained standing until 1951 when it was destroyed by fire caused by lightning striking it from a distance near Clearwater Beach according to oral history historian Don Sledge writing about Gadsden State Park website). Lady Lake, Florida was a Seminole Indian reservation and later a United States territory. The area now known as Lady Lake was home to the Seminoles for over two centuries. In 1824, the United States acquired Florida from Spain through the Treaty of Paris. The Native American nations who had occupied this part of Florida were forced to cede their land to U.S. control and in 1830, Lady Lake became part of Jacksonville Township in Duval County, Florida. In 1838, Jacksonville Township was divided into five tracts and one tract - called "Lake" - became the nucleus around which all other settlements grew. The name derived from an incident that took place there: A female Seminole named Hernando had married a white man and her children were born on what is now known as Old Fort Lauderdale Boulevard in Jacksonville Township; however they were re-christened "Lady Lake" after their mother's death some time later (Hernando is still mentioned in local phone books). The first European settlers arrived at Lady Lake in 1840 by boat from Pensacola Bay and landed at what is now called Siesta Key on Stilts Point on Biscayne Bay. They built homes along Shell Beach Road near present day Naples Middle School before moving inland towards what would become Old Fort Lauderdale Boulevard which connected them toJacksonville Township and eventually Tampa Bay! The first school opened at Lady lake in December 1840 by Mrs Eberhartus Tanner with three students! It was soon replaced by a Methodist church but when that burned down it reopened as a school again! In 1844/5 Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avila explored this area during his trip up the Gulf Coast of Florida where he noted various villages along the way including “Las Palmas” or “Lady Lakes” about 10 miles due east of modern day Jacksonville Landing on Stilts point Heading south he came upon an island measuring about 12 miles long & 4 wide with several small streams flowing onto it from different parts of Havana mountains fronting Cuban waters just offshore he named it Las Islas Menéndez de Avila y Flores meaning "the islands Menendez de Avellaneda y Flores". By 1850s most people living here either spoke English or Spanish so no record exists today as to whence these names originated However some say they may have come form HMS Beagle when she stopped here en route between Sydney & Melbourne during her circumnavigation of Australia
The Lady Lake area was first settled by the Seminoles in the 1830s. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson ordered all Native Americans living in Florida to leave or be put into concentration camps. The Seminoles refused to leave and fought a bloody battle with Jackson's forces. After the battle, the Seminoles retreated to their reservation on Lady Lake. The area was used as a military post during the American Civil War and later became a cattle ranching area.
