In 1845 alone, Captains Broadbent and Etienne Janney fought under General Andrew Jackson at Battle of Horseshoe Bend . After Jackson's victory over Major John Cushing at Tallahassee , Captain Broadbent took command of what remained of brigade numbered 3rd Regiment Fla Infantry (now 2nd Battalion - 9thFla Infantry) In 1865 Captain Broadbent led his brigade across Alabama River into Georgia where they engaged Union troops under Brigadier General Winfield Scott Aftermath of battle saw many men killed or wounded including Captain Broadbent himself who lost an arm near Gainesville Captain Broadbent returned to duty with 4th Fla Inf Div but resigned due to illness in 1870 before being discharged dishonorably In 1875 Captain John Troup led 5th Regiment Ga Volunteers onto peninsula unopposed; this event has been cited as one reason why Florida became soependent on federal militias during Reconstruction Era . Lady Lake was formed by the joining together of several small lakes in what is now Polk County. The name comes from a white woman, Lady Jane Mott, who donated land to the county for this purpose. The first residents of the area were primitive Seminole Indians, and there is evidence that they may have hunted and gathered around Lady Lake for centuries beforeEuropean settlers arrived. In 1868, General Andrew Jackson was elected President of the United States, and his administration introduced new legislation which aimed to increase cotton production in the southeastern United States. This led to increased demand for water resources in South Florida, and in 1870 Lady Lake became one of two reservoirs located within the state boundaries. In 1881 it was designated as the official county seat of Polk County. The development of local agricultural industries during the late 19th century helped contribute to population growth on Lady Lake while also providing jobs for many people. Today, some 4500 people live within easy reach of Lady Lake’s waterside attractions and attractions related to its history can be found throughout Polk County.
