In 1871, Colonel Crouch donated land for a school district which would later become Lady Lake School District #1. The first school building was completed in 1872 and named after Colonel Crouch's daughter, Eliza Jane Armstrong. The school district served Lady Lake until it merged into Seminole County Schools in 1949. During World War II, many soldiers from nearby Fort Brooke joined the United States Armed Forces to fight in Europe aboard ships or aircraft carriers offshore while their homes were bombed or destroyed by Japanese forces raiders or submarines. Some of these soldiers took up residence at Wilkinson Barracks while others moved into new buildings constructed near fort Brooke post office within weeks of their return home from service. After World War II, many servicemen returned home to find that their homes had been demolished or converted into apartments or rental properties; however, some of them remained at Wilkinson Barracks through various renovations and updates over time including additions for recreational shooting sports such as airsoft gaming; administrative offices; and classrooms used for military science courses such as basic combat surgery techniques (BCST). This period also saw significant changes to how rifles were being stored and employed inside Wilkinson Barracks including installation of an automatic loader/unloader system (ALUS) beginning in 1957 which allowed rifles to be unloaded quickly without having to remove each round from its magazine; installation of an M-16 stock assembly (later replaced by a standard M-4 stock); addition of a bipod (later replaced by an A2 tripod); conversion of some barracks rooms into living quarters; expansion onto adjoining property for gun storage; renovation of indoor plumbing systems; installation of air conditioning systems; etc.; all culminating with renovations undertaken between 1984-1987 that included replacement/replacementof entire roofing system plus addition/additionof new walls & window openings totaling approximately 16 feet making it one of largest rifle ranges in Florida
Lady Lake, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Hollywood, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by J.D. and Flora Cooks as a farmstead on the eastern edge of Lake Okeechobee. In 1902, it became a post office with ZIP code 32714. The name came from Lady Bird Johnson's home state of Texas which she visited while campaigning for president in 1948; she called the area "Lake Okeechobee Valley". An early settler, John Fenton, donated land to build a school and store near present day Lady Lakesee Boulevard and Old Umpqua Road (now State Road 7). A church was built on this property in 1903 and named after Mrs. Cooks' daughter Alma May Cook married Rev. George Hinson of Stonington Presbyterian Church in 1906; they opened their first conventicle at that location on October 3rd of that year. In 1917, Lady Lakesee Boulevard was established as one lane wide between Old Umpqua Road and State Road 7 due to construction projects associated with World War I; it has since been widened to two lanes both northbound and southbound except during severe weather events when one or both lanes may be closed temporarily for safety reasons A local ordinance adopted in 1945 prohibited discrimination against citizens based on race or national origin within any business or other institution providing services to the public On December 5th of that year an event occurred which has become known as "Christmas Day Massacre" when white supremacists working for Ku Klux Klan bombed several black churches throughout South America killing more than 60 people including 20 children
