Lady Lake is a census-designated place in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community occupies the eastern border of Polk County and includes most of Lady Lake Township. It began as a small post office called White Sands on December 5, 1892, within what is now known as Orange Blossom Trail Township. As post offices grew in size in Polk County, so did the communities they served; White Sands became Lady Lake on July 16, 1907. In 1916, the township's name was changed to Blackwater Township to avoid confusion with neighboring Blackwater River Valley which had been established two years earlier. The economy for much of its history has been based on agriculture and ranching; however, recent development has included a number of businesses including a grocery store and two schools (grades PreK-12). A fire destroyed much of the agricultural land near Lady Lake in 2003 but it has since been reforested and again produces crops such as corn and beans. In 2007, residents approved plans for an assisted living center adjacent to their primary school that would eventually include 148 units (104 single beds/64 doubles).
