Lady Lake, Florida is a town located in Pasco County, Florida. The population was 6,468 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The first European to visit Lady Lake was Manuel de Armas y Costilla on July 3, 1786. He named it "Las Palmas" after his homeland of Palmira in Spain. Although no evidence exists that a Spanish settlement ever occurred at Lady Lake, early Spanish exploration and trade expeditions passed through the region and there may have been some contact with Native Americans living in what is now Lady Lake when Columbus sighted the area in 1492 while sailing eastward along Tampa Bay. In 1857, General John C. Pakenham established Fort Brooke as a military post on an island south of present day Lady Lake for use by United States troops during the Seminole Wars against Fidel Castro's Cuban rebels who had taken up arms against American rule since 1793. The fort stayed in operation until 1898 when it was abandoned due to fears of another war with Cuba which started two years later and finished less than three months later when Havana fell to American forces following victory over Cuba's Marxist revolutionary government led by Fidel Castro Although Fort Brooke never saw combat during its time guarding Tampa Bay from Cubans, it did play an important role in American history by serving as a training ground for future officers providing vital experience leading Ulysses S Grant's army during the Civil War while also being used as a naval base for manning Union Pacific Railroad ships performing blockade duty off Cuban ports A number of homes still stand today inside present day downtown areas including some built by Pakenham himself and others completed between 1860-1862 including one known as "the White House". A replica ConfederateFortBrooke is located just outside of town limits on Highway 327 across from State Fairgrounds which served as troop barracks during the Civil War period while also doubling as a marketplace until 1971 when it closed because of economic conditions . Most importantly however is that more than 100 years after Fort Brooke closed its doors locals have maintained much or all original infrastructure such as water systems, bridges etc within city limits making this one of most intact prewar U.S Military communities remaining today . Lady Lake was founded in 1892 by Capt. James J. Cook, a British sea captain and explorer who explored the Florida Keys. The name was given to the lake because it is located on a "Lake of Many Lakes" (or "Lake of the Woods"), which refers to its many tributaries and impoundments. In 1903, Lady Lake was renamed for Mrs. John Fenton Mellon, an American woman who had contributed financially to improve education in the area and support local cultural activities. In 1935, Lady Lake became a state park after it was purchased by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection from Mrs. Mellon's estate. Today, Lady Lake offers visitors a number of activities such as fishing, boating, swimming, hiking and camping.
