Lady Lake is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lady Lake's name comes from Lady Charlotte Waterman, an American woman who donated land for the town and served as its first postmaster. The original store and garage were built on what is now the north side of Main Street. In 1907, Lady Lake became a county seat after it was selected by county commissioners from among three proposals submitted to them. At that time, Polk County consisted of only two towns: Pahokee and Bartow; both had populations under 1,000 people. In 1912, when Hammett County was created to include all of present-day Polk County except for portions of Pinellas and Osceola counties west of the Apalachicola River, Lady Lake became part of Hammett County too. In 1927, when Fort Myers split off from Polk County and formed its own government distinguishable only by its placement on Cape Coral Bay (henceforth known as Fort Myers), Lady Lake became one of four cities withinFort Myers city limits – along with North Port (later Sarasota), South Fort Myers (later Jensen Beach) and Clearwater (later Dunedin). That year too, Clearwater became a city when Daytona Beach split off from Daytona Beach City Limits Municipality. In 1934 Clearwater annexed much of neighboring Dunedin after that city’s mayor decided against becoming a part of Clearwater proper because he felt his citizens would not want to live next door to such beautiful beachfront property while their city stood almost deserted at night due to lack of development opportunities nearby! One interesting event that took place during this time period occurred in 1933 when local farmers organized themselves into what came to be known as the "Lakeland Fruits Marketing Cooperative". This group negotiated marketing contracts with several fruit companies located near other municipalities in order to ensure quality fruit products available throughout Central Florida despite having no connection whatsoever with those entities other than being cooperative members! After World War II ended there was significant growth in Lady Lake thanks largely to then-new residents coming over from Jacksonville or Tampa looking for jobs during peacetime shortages caused by war production quotas established by the US military authorities! As more people arrived things got out balance somewhat until finally through force majeure circumstances – primarily resulting from Hurricane Flora which struck just south/west of town on October 8th 1978 – everything went back into gear abruptly causing severe housing shortages which persist even today given joblessness rates well above average nationally!!! Today many locals still refer to their former downtown core as "the old days" although they've since replaced most all interior signage with modern building materials!! One potential explanation could be found inside recent courthouse walls where several large pictures depicting various aspects relating back gridlock during pre-flood years can be found including an actual map showing how much room remained within current boundaries allowed prior to settlement!!!!! Regardless though it does provide quite a unique insight into early 20th century local life
