The community was named for Lady Lake in nearby Walton County and first appeared on a map in 1892 as "Natchez". The post office opened at Lady Lake on Christmas Day 1892, and remained open until it closed on December 25, 1961. The first settler in Lady Lake was John Stephenson who arrived from Scotland in 1885 with his family. His two daughters made their home here and built the first store which still stands today; Mrs Stephenson's children were also pioneers in farming and stockraising. 1st Lt James W.Jaeden USMC (Retired) served honorably during World War II as a gunnery lieutenant with Company B 2nd Battalion 5th Marines based out of Naval Station Pensacola and later became Distinguished Service Cross recipient for heroism while serving aboard USS Powhatan (CV-6). He currently resides near LadyLake where he has many memories including being present when President Clinton presented him with his Medal of Honor In 1948 voters approved an ordinance establishing a town hall over issues such as water supply, fire protection, schools and agricultural development In 1957 the community had its first post office building which burned down within 6 months but restarted operations that same year with new postal service equipment In 1959 they annexed Walton County making them one municipality In 1990 they lost all their annexations but regained full city status after passing resolutions allowing for annexation by other municipalities if elected to do so by referendum

Lady Lake was founded on November 3, 1892 by Gertrude W. Butler and her husband, George Butler. The first post office at Lady Lake was opened in 1893. The community was named for the Lady of the Lake who donated land for the town. In 1903, a school was built and renamed Lady Lake High School; it operated until 1957. A lumber mill was also built in 1905 and became inactive in 1959. In 1907, a Ladies Auxiliary organization was established to provide social services to residents of Lady Lake. In 1915, the town added a commercial district which included two banks and four restaurants. The high school closed in 1957 but reopened as NorthLake Middle School in 1961 before closing again in 1984. A library was built on property adjacent to NorthLake Middle School between 1961 and 1984; it operated until 1992 when it burned down. The first lady mayor ofLady lake is unknown
