Kissimmee, Florida is a town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 21,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. The name Kissimmee comes from the Seminole word "kiwisimi" meaning "to kiss." In 1847, General Andrew Jackson and his army invaded Florida and captured Tallahassee. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer led an American force that fought for Jackson at Taliaferro's Mill on November 17, 1847. This event is also honored with a monument located in downtown Kissimmee. The first white person to live in Kissimmee was James Auld who arrived there in 1836 as captain of HMS Beagle under Captain Cook. He married Ann Smith on January 14, 1838 and they set up a home near present-day Indian Road and First Street. They had two children: John Auld (1839-1922) and Jessie Auld (1841-1915). From 1840 until he moved away in 1849, James Auld operated the Jaffrey Post Office which was across First Street from his home since it wasatterly grant by Governor Andrew Johnson to Joshua Jaffrey on December 5th of that year (# 16 Petitions 3rd Session Legislature Docs 790). In 1853 Captain Richard Byrd became the first man to summit Mount Everest after reaching its summit via dog sled over five weeks during what has been called North America's first winter ever recorded (-14 degrees Fahrenheit @ 9400 meters). Located just south of Kissimmee on Ussery Hill near today's intersection of Southern Boulevard and Indian Road, this impressive peak still garners top billing when it comes to coldest points east of the Rocky Mountains according to some scientific models! Additionally, there are several shops and restaurants scattered throughout downtown that cater to local cuisine including Brazilian Sausage Emporium (established 1984), Topo Chico's Mexican restaurant (formed 1987), Palace Grill (founded 2009), Pizzeria Bianca Italian Grill (operates since 1991), Riverwalk Cafe & Donut Shop (established 1994), Thai Garden Buffet ($)&*(formerly known as Royal Thai Kitchen) &*(Thai Garden Café) are all popular choices within walking distance of either full or partial hospitalization areas serving patients requiring extensive care with little or no time for worry.
On Kissimmee's east side, in the early 1800s, a Native American named Chief Osceola lived on a small island in the creek that flows through town. He was successful at fishing and trading with other tribes and he built himself a large home on the island. The chiefs of surrounding villages came to visit him and trade goods. One day, an Englishman named John Smith set out from Kingston, Jamaica, on a trip to find new land. He passed by Osceola's island and became interested in it because it looked like the perfect place to settle. He sent two boats with people to explore the area but they didn't find any gold or other valuable resources so they stopped returning. Eventually Smith realized that his trip was just an advertising campaign for the Australian colony of Jamaica instead of finding new land and returned home.
