Kissimmee, Florida is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,709 at the 2010 census. It is the county's second-largest city and the home of Kissimmee Regional Airport. In 1868, Jacksonville businessman John Linton bought 4,000 acres (1 km2) of land north of town to build what would eventually become Jacksonville Beach. In 1875, Orlando Sentinel publisher and political figure Jeptha Gardner bought 5acre (2 ha) of land east of town for $5 per acre ($40,000 at current prices). He named his new community "Kissimmee". By 1886, alligator hunting had brought economic development to this area which became known as "The Gator Country", thanks to early settlers who opened Fidelity Insurance Company storerooms there and developed a system of water pipes that allowed essential goods like groceries and lumber to be transported directly from Jacksonville to Kissimmee without having to go through Tampa or St Petersburg. In 1907 local developer A.C. Smith built a major textile mill on Boynton Creek near present-day Interstate 95/US 192; it remains one of the most important businesses in Kissimmee today. One reason why Kissimmee grew so quickly during this time was its location next door to two major airports – Daytona Beach International Airport and Jacksonville Municipal airport – both providing access to many people and opportunities for commerce and entertainment. After Pearl Harbor Day 2nd September 1945 an air raid siren sounded out over downtown Miami almost immediately after Japanese forces bombed Biscayne Bay killing dozens if not hundreds individuals working at plants along SR 508 causing widespread panic among those living close by with stores closing early as people seek shelter inside automobiles or churches.. Businesses closed early because they knew their customers were safe but employees lost their jobs meaning no money went into circulation making it difficult for companies starting up again.. Many residents moved away during postwar years looking for more affordable housing than what existed nearer by although some did return during post-war boom years when industries bounced back .
