The first store opened in 1915 and today there are over 150 businesses located along this main commercial artery which runs through downtown Kissimmee. In 1907, an organization called Plantation League of Florida began to promote agriculture in southcentral Florida with the goal of developing small towns throughout the state so that agricultural production could meet needs for food security without having to leave their homes. One result was that two miles north of downtownkissimmee a new community was born: Northport Shopping Center dating back to 1914 became one of South Central Florida's most important shopping destinations until it closed its doors in 2006 due to bad economic conditions; however, since then Northport has been reborn as an anchor tenant at the center which hosts several hundred local retailers including Sears,[2] JCPenney,[3] Macy's[4], Bed Bath & Beyond,[5][6] Ann Taylor[7][8][9][10] Alice Boughton Stores[11][12], Office Depot.[13][14] In addition many other small businesses have locate within walking distance or close by such as Subway,[15],[16][/17][/18][/19][/20]. The University Park neighborhood adjacent to Downtown also experienced significant growth during this time period with various colleges and universities opening up campuses here including Rollins College (now Rollins School Of Management), Environmental Studies Institute (ESI), but most notably US Naval Academy which moved from West Palm Beach into nearby Federal Hill Campus beginningowan 2002 which has resulted in more than $250 million worth of development projects totaling 8 acres across 3 blocks adjacent to USCIS Building – making Northport tomorrow’s global campus for international students! Today there are still some historic buildings left standing such as original courthouse building currently used by Homeland Security Investigations - you can walk inside!!
