Kissimmee, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando– Melbourne– Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kissimmee was founded on November 9, 1907 by J.C. Wetherbee and his date-line "Kissimmee" stands for "New Beginnings". In 1959 it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 27,711 making it one of the fastest growing cities in Florida during that time period according to the FBI report from 2000 Census. The area now known as Kissimmee was first inhabited by two groups of Seminole Indians: The Okeechobee Tribe and the Creek Nation. The town site was chosen because it had no man-made obstacles in its way and could easily be accessed by wagon path or horseback ride from nearby Cedar Key and Volusia County. On February 14, 1907, Wetherbee donated 1 acre (0.40 km²)of land to the City of Kissimmee for use as a public school ground which would later become Evergreen Elementary School located today on North Main Street within walking distance to most households within the city limits; also included were 2 lots donation free for anyone who erected a house on them – this lot group would ultimately form what is now known as Highland Park/Alvarado Avenue which stretched from Northwest corner of US 192 extending east along Alvarado Avenue until just past University Boulevard then running southwesterly under I-4 before turning east along US 192 until just past Renaissance Road then continuing southwest under I-4 until reaching NW corner of Orange Blossom Trail where today's University Drive meets Interstate 4
