Kissimmee, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,641 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, its population was 1,971. Its name comes from the Seminole tribe's phrase "kissing cousins." The land that now makes up Kissimmee was first occupied by Native Americans in what is now Polk County. They were followed by Spanish colonists in 1763 and by American settlers in 1823. In 1868, Kissimmee became part of the Cuban Republic and until 1959 it was a dependency of Havana. On November 11th, 1962, as part of an unprovoked military invasion of Cuba led by Fidel Castro, missiles were smuggled into Cuba from our country and placed on launch pads around Cubana Island; this placed us within range of these missile sites which allowed North Korea to fire upon our islands (1). This provocation had serious consequences for both countries and resulted in over 60 years of economic sanctions against Cuba (2). In January 2003 President George W Bush announced his candidacy for re-election with the goal of ending all trade between our countries (3). The resulting economic embargo caused great hardship for countless Cuban citizens who were left without food or medical supplies while their governments continued to provide little support (4). For many residents there was also a sense that they had been abandoned by their leaders; this contributed to feelings of mistrust leading to violence and chaos throughout much of Cuba during Mr. Bush's first term as president (5). Aftershock events took place throughout much parts of Latin America during Mr. Bush's second term as president including: Hurricane Katrina which devastated New Orleans; 9/11 which destroyed two towers in New York City; and Hurricanes Irene & Stanislaus which struck California’s Central Valley causing catastrophic flooding (6) These events illustrated just how interconnected global economies are and how difficult it is for any one country to maintain control over them let alone multiple ones at once. Although much has changed since then - most notably the opening up of Cuba - we can still see echoes of these old problems when looking at current issues in Latin America or the Caribbean region such as Venezuela’s ongoing political instability or Nicaragua’s ongoing conflict with FARC rebels (.7)
