Kissimmee, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. In 1907 Kissimmee's first courthouse was destroyed by a fire and replaced with a new one that still stands today. The current courthouse was built in 1954 and has been used as the seat of government for Polk County since then. The name "Kissimmee" itself is believed to be derived from an Indian word meaning "place where two or more people are going to kiss." The town began growing when Methodists founded a church there in 1894 and started selling land around it for development. By 1899, there were about 100 people living in Kissimmee. In 1907, Kissimmee became the county seat of Polk County after being chosen over Marianna from within the county by a vote of county commissioners. At first, only white citizens could own property in the town; black citizens had to purchase land elsewhere before they could build homes or shops. However, this soon changed as residents began moving into town who were unable to find property anywhere else nearby. In 1916, Kissimmee became home to its first post office which remained until 1934 when it moved to Sanfordville due to population growth (and because Sanfordville had better transportation). Today's economy largely depends on agriculture which produces food items such as fruits and vegetables; livestock products; furniture manufacturing; and biotechnology products such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices
Kissimmee, Florida was founded in 1892 by George Washington Kiss and his wife Ann. The town became a center for citrus production and was known for its oranges, grapefruit, and other fruits. In the 1930s, the city experienced a period of economic downturn due to the Great Depression. However, it regained its former prosperity during World War II when many businesses moved to Kissimmee from Orlando. The city also experienced growth following the passage of Amendment 2 in 1968 which allowed gay marriage in Florida.
