Kissimmee, Florida is a small town located in central Florida. The population was 10,781 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kissimmee-Hollywood-Fort Pierce Combined Statistical Area. The name "Kissimmee" comes from two Seminole words - Kiskamook and Kamokoma - meaning "place where the sun sets." The first settlers in Kissimmee were men who came overland from Georgia in 1821. A community was founded on what is now US Highway 56 in 1825 by three brothers named James, John and George Washington Grant. By 1830, the population had grown to more than 100 people, and a post office was established that year. In 1831, land was purchased for a school which opened in 1835. Kissimmee became an important center during the American Civil War because it served as a supply depot for Confederate forces fighting in that conflict. In 1865, after the war ended, many of the residents moved to Fort Myers or Daytona Beach because of lack of job opportunities in Kissimmee. In 1922, when Progress Wireless built their original transmission tower on State Road 495 just east of town limits (now US 1), they christened their new station "Progress". After years of service and many expansions by Progress Wireless LLC (later Verizon Communications Inc.), today'sProgressBroadband Tower stands as one of Kissimmee's most iconic symbols and remains one of its most visited tourist attractions. The town has also been home to several other notable businesses including IBM World Headquarters from 1974-1996; First National Bank until its closure in 1999; Coca Cola Refreshment plant from 1964-1991; ABC Television Network's main studios until 1993; scores of restaurants and bars beginning with Jimmy Dean's Barbecue Pit back in 1957; AutoZone starting out as Wernher’s Grocery Store before becoming Chrysler/Jeep Parts & Service Center before moving into its current location adjacent to First National Bank building within days after opening; Sears Roebuck & Co.'s main store closed down completely but portions still standing inside are open as Sears Home Hardware outside . . . you get the idea! Today's economy is based largely on tourism with major companies such Asiana Airlines Co., Samsung Electronics Co., Disneyworld Resort & Convention Complex Ltd., Carnival Cruise Lines Ltd., Live Nation Entertainment Inc., PGA Tour Golf Links at Miramar (formerly Palm Springs International Racetrack) serving as both courses and hotel complexes making it one big golf resort complex! The town was founded in 1895 by a group of pioneers who came from northeastern Ohio. The town rapidly developed due to its location and its access to the Kissimmee River which provided irrigation for the local farmers. By 1907, the population had reached 2,500 people and by 1912 it had grown to 10,000 residents. In 1928, Kissimmee had become a city and was named afternode capital of Florida. The city annexed neighboring Sanford in 1959 and has since grown into one of the most populous areas in central Florida with over 238,000 residents as of 2019. Kissimmee is home to two universities: The University of Central Florida (UCF) and Samford University (Sammurray). Other notable institutions include ClearwaterFL Medical Center, which has been ranked #1 by UPMC Health Care Week; American International Speedway; Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park; Universal Studios Hollywood; and Pinellas Park Golf Course
