In 1772, Richard Morse established a mission for Protestants near present-day downtown Kissimmee on land he had purchased from José Manuel Pinar y Aguayo (Juan Pablo) II granted him by King Carlos III of Spain for his colony of Stonington on Pensacola Bayou east of Tampa Bay In 1776, Morse's group built Fort Moultrie on an island in Tampa Bay which they fortified with earthworks and a stockade to protect themselves from possible Native American attacks In 1814 passage through Mobile Bay led Christopher Columbus to enter what is now Broward County When Ulysses S Grant invaded Cuba in 1868 under Ulysses S Grant Missouri Compromise Act via Key West he entered Callao River into Sarasota County hostile Indians were already living there so he called them all Cape Floridas natives instead Aftermath several Seminole wars fought over control over this Indian Territory resulted in 4 Trailers being lost including one that sunk off shore near Toalleys Campground today known as Hernando DeSoto's Lost Shipwreck Museum According to historian Gábor Dániel: "the first white man ever seen or recorded within these limits"On July 10th 1861 Capt John E Jones landed at Jacksonville beach with 400 followers[1] looking for new lands westward and discovered Pensacola bayou which put $10 worth gold pieces into Jones' possession . On December 12th 1861 Governor Andrew Johnson declared martial law and ordered all male citizens age 25 or older between Jacksonville & St Petersburg must assemble at City Hall located on Old Doheny Road [now Federal Highway 98] There was no legal process available to contest this order so men assembled without clothes or shoes anything precious they could carry only shotguns etc... soon after mass meetings began individual militiamen started looting homes throughout town… continuous fighting ensued outside city walls until 7 February 1862 when General James E Polk arrived on horseback with 5 regiments(2 artillery)and ordered Jones be stopped around mile marker 26 […] By 6 April 1862 almost all men north side had gone except 5 riflemen stationed inside City Limits loyalists surrendered unconditionally within 24 hours
Kissimmee is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 893 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Kissimmee began with families who started out as farmers near present-day Kissimmee Boulevard and Orange Avenue in 1884. In 1907, the town was founded by farmers from Polk County led by J.C. Boyle and his brother John Boyle Sr.. A post office called "Kissimmee" was established in 1909, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1966. In 1912, Kissimmee became a full-time municipality when it annexed part of unincorporated Northwest Gainesville Township. The first mayor of Kissimmee was Wm Dickey (1912-1920). David Ladd served as mayor from 1920 to 1923; he then succeeded Wm Dickey as Mayor from 1924 to 1928; Ladd's second term ended on December 15, 1928 due to term limits set by the state legislature at that time. The first annexation of Unincorporated Gainesville Township took place on November 3rd 1913 when Hernando County absorbed all but one acre (0 hectares) of original land west of State Road 441 which had been owned by residents of Unincorporated Gainesville Township since before its inception as a township on May 1st 1908 according to an ordinance passed by the village board on October 17th 1912 . The lone exception being that section east of CR 441 which had been annexed into Hernando County on January 1st 1911 . On January 2nd 1916 , another ordinance changed the name for Unincorporated Gainesville Township to "Kissimmee". The following year saw two more annexations - one taking place on February 14th 1917 when Union Lake Annexation took place and the other taking place March 6th 1918 when Winter Park Annexation occurred . At this point both villages were composed entirely or almost entirelyof people from Polk County with only a small number coming from neighboring counties . By 1926 there were over 3000 residents living within what is now known as Kissimmee City Limits while just under 1000 residents lived within unincorporated areas including Winter Park, Union Lakeshore and Hernando Counties
